An African Cheetah cools off as the rain pours down.
The Story of "War Paint"
The African Cheetah is one of nature's great feats of evolution. Capable of reaching incredible speeds, the cheetah blazes through the plains faster than any other mammal, some reaching as much as 60mph! If you look closely, you will notice his black spots are actually a different length and consistency from the rest of his coat. This is because the cheetah's spots actually as a cooling mechanism to help the cheetah cool down in a hot climate after expelling such energy on a high-speed chase.
This photo was taken at a Wildlife center called Wildlife Safari in Roseburg, Oregon. The facility has a world-renowned Cheetah breeding program, helping to preserve the species as it continues to be hunted and destroyed in Africa.
