St Michaels Mount in Mounts Bay, Cornwall, England
The Story of "Sunrise At the Mount"
The tide determines access to this impressive island castle in Mount's Bay, Cornwall. This destination was the ultimate goal of our 5-day road trip through England's Jurassic Coast and out to Cornwall, and a sunrise shoot was the dream.
A lot need to go right in order to get the shot I imagined. For one, I wanted the path to be visible leading out to the island. Secondly, I needed to find a high enough vantage point to be looking down on the track. Last, and most importantly, we needed the usual England clouds to take a day off and provide us with a sunrise.
What I received was far, far more than I even imagined. The sky that morning was one of the best I have ever seen, the tide stayed nice and shallow, revealing the path to the castle, and with fate provided the location for our shoot a nice prior when I saw a similar view on a postcard. I bought the postcard and showed it to our hotel desk agent, who guessed at the road it was taken on. Beyond a simple high view, I also discovered a much more engaging foreground in the quaint, traditional village of Marazion below.
Sometimes, you just need to get lucky!
